From rochvelleth’s LJ (although I’ve added a few of my own):
YOU KNOW YOU’RE A BRITISH 90s KID IF:
- YOU CAN SING THE RAP TO “THE FRESH PRINCE OF BELL AIR” — Well this is a story all about how/my life got flipped turned upside down… After lots of brain power I think I’ve reconstructed all of it in my head
- YOU’VE WORN LEGGINGS AND FELT COOL — No but I remember people who did.
- YOU USED TO LOVE PLAYING WITH YOUR “PUPPY IN MY POCKETS” — Ditto.
- YOU REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY WORTH GETTING UP ON A SATURDAY MORNING TO WATCH LIVE & KICKING OR SM:TV. — I think you mean Going Live! and The 8:15 from Manchester (Rentaghost FTW).
- YOU HAD A HUGE FRINGE AT SOME POINT IN YOUR CHILDHOOD. — Possibly.
- YOU REMEMBER READING AND WATCHING “GOOSEBUMPS” — A bit too old there but my sister certainly did.
- YOU TOOK PLASTIC CARTOON LUNCH BOXES TO SCHOOL — I was King of the School with my mighty Masters of the Universe lunch box…
- YOU KNOW THE WORDS FROM THE SHAKEY JAKE MILKSHAKE ADVERTS — Must’ve missed that one. Mind you I rarely watched ITV.
- YOU REMEMBER THE CRAZE OF YO-YOS AND TAMAGOTCHI’S — As if it were yesterday. I even wrote a Tamagotchi clone for my RISC OS box.
- YOU STILL GET THE URGE TO SAY “NOT” AFTER EVERY SENTENCE. — Never. NOT!!! I firmly believe that Mike Myers is one of the best Americans at being intentionally funny (but then he was raised in England :)).
- YOU KNEW THAT KIMBERLY, THE PINK RANGER, AND TOMMY, THE GREEN RANGER WERE MEANT TO BE. — Just too old for Power Rangers…
- YOU COLLECTED POKEMON CARDS. — Ditto.
- YOU PLAYED AND/OR COLLECTED POGS. — I knew people who did and never, ever got a satisfactory explaination of why on Earth they bothered.
- YOU HAD A WEIRD ALIEN THAT LIVED IN GOOEY STUFF IN A PLASTIC ‘POD’ AND THOUGHT IF YOU STUCK 2 BACK TO BACK THEY WOULD HAVE A BABY! — Whoa! They were way after my time.
- YOU WATCHED THE ORIGINAL POSTMAN PAT, FIREMAN SAM AND NINJA TURTLES. — Most certainly did. Don’t tell me that Pat and Sam have been remade!
- YIKES PENCILS WERE THE BEST!-WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? — Bot old for them but I remember kids going bonkers.
- YOU REMEMBER WHEN THE NEW BEANIE BABIES WERE ALWAYS SOLD OUT — Ew. Girls’ things. Icky.
- YOU GOT YOUR MUM TO BUY ‘BN’ BISCUITS. — BN biscuits are incredibly common in France and hence when they suddenly arrived in the UK I didn’t really notice or care.
- YOU USED TO WEAR THOSE STICK ON EARRINGS, NOT ONLY ON YOUR EARS BUT AT THE CORNERS OF YOUR EYES. — No but the, at that point, becoming slightly less icky girls did.
- YOU KNOW THE MACERENA BY HEART. — No but it never stopped me trying to sing and dance when it came on the sound system.
- “TALK TO THE HAND”. — I conversed with many a palm.
- YOU REMEMBER THE TIME BEFORE LITERACY AND NUMERACY HOUR EXISTED. — WTF? I think we called it English and Maths when I was at school. We did have Uninterrupted Silent Sustained Reading at primary school but that was probably so the teacher could troll all the parents by getting kids to come back home saying how much they liked the USSR.
- YOU THOUGHT BRAIN FROM “PINKEY AND THE BRAIN” WOULD FINALLY TAKE OVER THE WORLD. — Yes. On the other hand the seris would’ve jumped the shark at that point.
- YOU REMEMBER BUM BAGS. — Yes and although very practical they still make you look like you are either pregnant or suffering from piles depending on your prefered way of hanging them.
- YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE ON FUN HOUSE — I did indeed want to use my body and my brain to try and play the game.
- YOU COLLECTED TAZOS. — Only the ones free in cereals.
- 2 WORDS, SPICE GIRLS. — I remember watching Newsround where they were trying to get publicity for themselves and thinking `these girls’ll never be famous’.
In addition I have a few of my own:
- You never forget the intials of the last 6 months in the year.
- Similarly there are indeed too many broken hearts in the world.
- You had rampant lust for HYPERCOLOR T-shirts and thought it incredibly cool that a flourescent patch would slowly expand out from under your armpits.
- You played Top Trumps the first time around. You can also still remember the Top Trump from each of the decks you owned.
- At least one person you knew almost got brained when you tried to recreate Mallett’s Mallet.
- You’re still humming Too Many Broken Hearts aren’t you.
- You remember the BBC’s cover of It’s Such a Perfect Day.
- Children’s TV was better when being broadcast from a broom cupboard.
- The Krypton factor.
- You had the Mary Whitehouse Experience.
- You watched a number of ‘very special Blossoms’ and all your friends would shout ‘Whoa!’ in unison when suprised.
- You would definitely’ve explained a few things to Clarissa if you know what I mean… (As in you’d explain you are in fact a sex machine!)
- Chesney Hawkes.
- You can still argue about the merits of Blur and Oasis.
- Natalie Imbruglia is ‘that bird from Neighbours’.
- Edd the Duck.
- You remember when area codes didn’t all start with ‘01′.
