I’ve only saved the interesting questions (IMHO) so it is probably worth de-cutting.

Patterns are meaningless

All six of the people in my firends list whose usernames begin with ‘L’ are female. All five that begin with ‘C’ are male. I am avoiding work. The Pope is most likely not Jewish.

Feeling better

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Well today I am less stressed, seeing light at the end of the tunnel as I am. Thanks to , , Alan, , and Saffy for a lovely night last night. Initially I heased Castle-wards for some b33r and then to the Bun Shop for a pub-quiz with , and Saffy. There were too few people to quiz but it was a lovely night all the same, gently relaxing and it was nice chatting to people I’ve not seen in a while. The manager brought out the puzzle round for us to have fun with in the absense of a quiz and much fun was fun figuring out the rubrics.

Had a mini-meeting with supervisor today about thesis. Some terribly fair comments on some bit where I had skimmed over some detail but mostly it went fine.

This is fucking stupid

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

I’ve now been staring at the ceiling awake for the past hour trying not to think about The Final Confrontation with the Landlady. She makes me so angry[1]. I can feel my stomach doing loop-de-loop and am totally incapable of sleeping. I really think she is beginning to make me ill. Hence my appearing on LJ in an attempt to move my mind to other matters in hope of sleeping tonight.

[1] I very rarely get truly angry with people but she just really annoys me, as one might’ve guessed :).

Grrr

Our landlady has surpassed herself in terms of stupidness. She said in an email today (not Saturday when she actually visited) that she expected the carpets to be cleaned again by the end of the week — experience showing one has about a fornight lead time of these things. This is despite us having got them cleaned, at great expense, a scant 3 months ago for her last inspection. I am refusing and fully intend to take her to court if she attempts to remove it from the deposit. We are, like most tenancy agreements these days, obliged to have the house cleaned before vacating but there is no time-limit on how long before moving out we must do so.

Update: Did I also mention she wants us to pay rent up until the 23rd even though she told me she intended to spend some nights here from the 13th to get decorators, etc. in. If that isn’t taking occupation of the house then I’m a dutchman.

Breezy

So far so good. Aside from a little LiveCD magic to fix some issues with my xorg.conf which were a result of my own fiddling (and which locked the machine) there were suprisingly few problems. I also replaced the GNOME window manager metacity with xfwm4 since it has some features lacking in metacity while remaining light, attractive and metacity-like enough for GNOME not to moan. Imagine my suprise when, upon logging in, I found a delicate drop shadow around windows. All very nice but, currently, it causes GL apps to crash the x-server, not good! Lets hope some future upgrade will make GL work nicely. In the meantime the Composite extension is remaining disabled…

Scary

Here comes breezy[1]…

[1] Yes I know it is unstable but there are a huge number of breezy packages already installed on my system which will probably hurt more than dist-upgrade, that and the nVidia bug appears to have been fixed.

Logistics

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Hurricane Katrina has caused a reported £1.4×1010 worth of damage[1]. In cases like that I wonder how that figure is calculated. Certainly if the insurance companies had to process and pay out claims individually then that might be the case but surely it is a lot more effective, and cheaper, in the long-run to have all the insurers band together and set up a clear-up team; trying to book individual house dryers, demolishers, builders, decorators on a case by case basis would be crazy.

So I was wondering, does anyone here know exactly how the clearup is organised? Is there, for example, a project manager who co-ordinates the clearup for an entire street ‘pipelining’ the repair forces or is it really done on a per-policy claim basis?

[1] It is easier for me to compare the scale of that amount of money denoting it thus, four orders of magnitude more than a typical Lotto win for example.

Oooh. All you can eat barbecue at The Carlton today from 4 to 8pm. I shall think about attending.
